I know already of several francophiles in our class - myself, Marilyn Mandel Lender, Michael Feuerstein? Who else is out there? Let's start a discussion thread here where we can share our memories and experiences, news, fun slang expressions, travel books, books that take place in France (I loved Sarah Turnbull's Almost French about an Australian journalist who moves to Paris and falls in love with a Frenchman), great apps (I just got Fotopedia on my iPad and iPhone, one for Paris and one for France - lots of gorgeous photos with accompanying histories and maps), etc.

Who would like to join me on this journey to the City of Lights?

Laurel, francophile through and through

I'm off to the mother ship tonight for 10 days tasting and visiting the winemakers in Burgundy, Champagne, Northern Rhone and even Bordeaux. I've got miles to go before I sleep. (http://gnn63.com/wp-content/plugins/mingle-forum/feed.php?topic=5 I think someone famous said that)

Why waste time sleeping? You have more important things to do! Bon Voyage!

Ok, count me in. Total dwell time over 50 years, in France , is around a month so far, and only benefit of HS French was being allowed to take the dreaded, unpalatable frosh humanities requirement in French which made things slightly more interesting. Current ownership of a Citroen 2cv keeps me in local contact with francophiles, one actual French guy, and one Belgian gal. Various factors inhibit extended travel though.

Do you know how the French parallel park in a Citroen 2cv (otherwise affectionately referred to as a "deux chevaux" which means 2 horses or horsepower)? They back in until they hit the car behind, then move up until they hit the car in front, and keep repeating this process until they are more or less parked. Usually less - they always seem to be sticking out into the street. Gotta love the French!

Ok. France, carousels, Governor's Island newly liberated for play, an outdoor bistro and Summer!

For those who have been away, Governors has been partly cleared lately and can be bicycled etc. Since it's actually an island, it's like going someplace different, just without the air travel.

Also, Bastille Day, last Sunday, was a big event, with many restaurants, funny French cars and Solexes all over, despite some fierce temperatures.

Rich, What a wonderful post. In the last 2 years I lived on the upper west side, I would bike down the West Side Hwy beside the river, onto the free ferry to Governor's Island... this bucolic refuge with the best view of Manhattan and the South St Seaport. These wonderful carousels and other 19th Cen. folderol from France is just wonderful Thanks so much for this, Froggy... most enjoyable. Makes me glad I designed this website for you. Bon Fête de Bastille!

Hi Rich,

I had never heard of Fête Paradiso - what a wonderful idea - fabuleux. I have subscribed to their website in hopes that they might come to California some day. Did you go there on Bastille Day? If so, did you take pictures? We want to see! Merci bien, mon ami.
